How can we make DocumentCloud better?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  2. How about some analytics?

Is there any plan in the works to provide statistics for the number of views for documents? Just that basic stat would be helpful, though a full analytics package would be nice too.

This is a natural idea and one we’ve certainly considered. We’re tracking some activity on our end but haven’t yet decided how to expose them to users. We’ll keep you updated as we decide!

  3. Exporting timelines

Complex documents are often best made sense of when timelines are extracted from them. The ultility of DocumentCloud's timeline function is limited as one cannot have a complete timeline overview at once, and as one is unable to edit the results.
I suggest a function to export the timeline to Excel or similar, with values of "Date", "Document excerpt" and "Source [indicating which document and page, and perhaps even a hyperlink back to it in DocumentCloud]".
In the resulting spreadsheet one would be able to do one's own edits and insertions, making further sense of it all.

  4. Projects within Projects

Currently projects work like folders in Document Cloud, and it would be really helpful to be able to drag and drop projects into other projects; so a parent project can be the folder for a lot of connected projects with heavy data sets or files.

  6. Highlight function

Sometimes I just want to highlight text, not leave a note. I'd love the option to just drag a cursor over a few words or lines to draw attention to it.

  7. More, better API examples

I would love it if the API documentation contained links to a complete source code example or examples of the API being implemented for a particular project.
With a limited (but growing) knowledge of scripting, examples of source code can help me move along implementation of the API much more rapidly.

  8. Easier splitting of documents into separate files

It would be helpful to have a feature allowing users to easily split up bulk document collections into smaller parts (large FOIA dumps for example) as they scan through the document viewer. Would be especially handy for secondary analysis tools like Overview.

  9. Combine documents

Currently, you can insert, rearrange, or delete pages within a document. It would be helpful to be able to combine whole documents.

  10. Make plain text version of embedded notes available via the API or by default

When you highlight part of the document and add an annotation, create a plain text version of the highlighted part of the document that can either be retrieved via the API or accessed by the user by default. The user could opt to access the plain text version by clicking "read transcript" (or something of the like) on the embedded note.

This would help with readability on mobile devices. It would also probably help to give editors the ability to correct the plain text version in case it's not totally accurate.

  12. Can annotations be created via the API?

This would be helpful, and it appears to not be possible.

  13. import from web url

Any way to upload/import directly from a web url, and set the "original document link" rather than downloading and then re-uploading the file?

  14. Emailing attachments to DC

It would be fantastic if the system could accept email forwards and rip the attachments from them. Right now, my work process is to see the email, download the doc, and then upload it. An email grabber would take one step off that process. Thanks!

  15. Improved sort options

Would be nice to be able to sort in ascending or descending order, which (unless Im missing something) isn;t possible. I have a set of docs related to an ongoing court case and would like to be able to sort so that the most recent ones are on top. By prefixing the title with the date, I can sort oldest to newest, but not the other way around.

  16. Users request the ability to export timeline/entities

The document cloud view timeline tool is incredibly useful -- but to bring the functionality full-circle, users request the ability to export these timelines in useful structure data that can then be transformed into bulleted lists, etc.

  17. Deep-link to annotation without annotation viewer popup

I'm building an inline annotation system for the Chicago Tribune similar to work done by ProPublica (e.g. http://www.propublica.org/article/why-cant-linda-carswell-get-her-husbands-heart-back). After running our system by some users here, I'd like to be able to deep-link directly from the embedded note to the annotated location in the document without the annotation popup displaying. I can somewhat hack around this by linking to the page, but it would be very useful to target the annotation directly.

  18. Add / combine entities

It would be great to be able to "teach" about entities that I know are in the documents, but that aren't recognized or are split.

I'd like to say, look for this entity called XYZ. I'd also like to "teach" the system that entity ABC is the same as DEF.

Ex: Bank of America is an entity, and it should pick up the full name and variations on the abbreviation.

  19. Allow selecting text on "document" view

Yes, being able to select (and edit) the OCR text in "text" view is easy, but it requires an extra step that is frustrating when you're working on a lengthy document. I want to be able to select text without switching views, like you can in Adobe Acrobat.

  20. Create a "Publish all in Project" Button

When dealing with lots and lots of documents associated with a project, a button to publish all is nicer than scrolling through the list and selecting all, then clicking through a series of options to publish. Thanks!
